A Note from Emily Ruela, Director of Miracle Family Relations:

“Every year during the RebelTHON Board Retreat in August, there is a Back to School Party hosted for our Miracle Families who are local to the Jackson area. This is one of the first events we are able to host for our Miracle Families and it gives all of the RebelTHON leadership team an opportunity to visit with returning Miracle Families, as well as get to know some of our first year Miracle Families.

During the party this year, everyone got to draw a picture that will be featured as a part of a larger mural within newly renovated Children’s of Mississippi. This was such a special addition that will allow RebelTHON and our wonderful Miracle Families to be a part in a new piece of art within a hospital that is so near and dear to all of our hearts.

The Director of Children’s Miracle Network and Community Fundraising at Batson Children’s Hospital, Jennifer Hospodor, attended our Back to School Party and was able to explain a little more about the mural. The hospital’s vision is to collect 8,000 hand-drawn pictures from the community, patients, patients’ families, and organizations like RebelTHON. The art will be collected and arranged to create a large pictorial mural in the new lobby of Children’s of Mississippi. Artists will be able to search their name online and find their art among the thousands on the wall. We were thrilled that she wanted our group to be part of the artwork, along with the Miracle Kids and Families at our party.

Overall, the Back to School party was definitely the highlight of my summer! We were able to sing, dance, color, and just enjoy the time we had with the families that encourage us throughout our fundraising events the whole year. Personally, my favorite part of the party was seeing the Miracle Kids come in the door with the biggest smile on their face and to see the big hugs that they gave everyone in the room. The Back to School Party this past weekend meant so much to me and I am truly thankful for all of the amazing support we have received!”
